David Levit, Ph.D., ABPP is a Diplomate in Psychoanalysis and in Clinical Psychology. His faculty positions are: Faculty and Supervising Analyst, Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP); Co-Founder, Co-Chair, and Faculty, MIP Postgraduate Fellowship-West; Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Tufts Medical School; Adjunct Associate Professor, Smith College of School for Social Work. He is a Fellow at the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis, and a Fellow at the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. He is certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). He is in private practice in Amherst, MA where he provides individual therapy and psychoanalysis for adults and consultation for colleagues.
We know that the deepest disturbances must be reached to foster the deepest changes and growth. But what do we do when some of our patients suffer relentlessly through dissociated, dysregulated states of catastrophic proportions, when these states are repetitive but not generative, when our psychoanalytic forms of holding, provision, and containment are just not good enough? After a number of years in psychoanalytic practice, Dr. Levit trained in Somatic Experiencing (SE), a non-psychoanalytic, biopsychological model for treating trauma. He will present clinical process in order to explicate the SE model and to illustrate how SE perspectives and approaches can inform and enrich our psychoanalytic ways of looking, listening, and responding. He will emphasize how SE can supplement and enfold into psychoanalytic processes of intersubjective regulation, crucial for patients who are exquisitely vulnerable to severe over-activation (overwhelming anxiety, panic, terror, agitation, rage, explosiveness, etc.) and/or under-activation (freeze, numbness, emptiness, deadness, etc.). He will discuss the relationship between SE and major psychoanalytic paradigms, looking at points of convergence, divergence, synergy and tension, in consideration of therapeutic options, therapeutic process, and therapeutic action. He will share a professional and personal journey of interweaving SE into psychoanalytic treatment.
After attending this intermediate-level program, participants will be able:
1. To discuss dissociation and multiplicity of self states utilizing the conceptual framework of Somatic Experiencing.
2. To identify ways in which dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system affects patients’ psychological capacities, including in session.
3. To define ways in which principles and modes of intervention in Somatic Experiencing dovetail with major psychoanalytic paradigms.
4. To critique modes of therapeutic response or intervention from Somatic Experiencing as they might be integrated into psychoanalytic treatment.
