DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a bio-psychological model originally developed by Peter Levine for understanding and treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It has been expanded to treat psychic/somatic/nervous system dysregulation more generally. SE provides perspectives and approaches that are especially helpful in our work with clients who are prone to states of intense over-activation (anxiety, panic, terror, agitation, rage, mortification, etc.) or under-activation (freeze, numbness, emptiness, deadness, etc.). A central aim of SE is to facilitate the restoration and enhancement of the client’s intrinsic regulatory capacities, with the larger goal of bringing a more highly resourced self to the task of processing life’s ongoing experiences (including experiences in the psychotherapy context). SE has particular relevance for people who are vulnerable to the triggering of dissociative states related to trauma.
After many years of practicing psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis, Dr. Levit trained in SE. He will discuss his efforts to integrate this approach into psychodynamic psychotherapy. On the theoretical level, he will discuss and contextualize central principals and techniques of SE in terms of psychodynamic paradigms. On the clinical level, he will present psychotherapy process material to illustrate his attempts to interweave this non-psychodynamic approach into psychodynamic treatment. He will also discuss ways in which the weave is not seamless.

David Levit, Ph.D., ABPP, SEP. Diplomate in Psychoanalysis and in Clinical Psychology. Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). Faculty positions: Faculty and Supervising Analyst, Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP); Co-founder, Co-chair, and Faculty, MIP Postgraduate Fellowship Program-West; Instructor in Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School; Adjunct Instructor in Psychiatry, Tufts Medical School. His office is in Amherst, MA where he has been in private practice since 1989. He provides individual therapy and psychoanalysis and consultation for colleagues.

The structure is designed to help clinicians deepen their understanding and enhance their skills in conducting psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
The number of participants in the program will be limited in order to enhance seminar participation. We will meet at the Austen Riggs Center on Thursday evenings from September 6, 2018 through May 2, 2019.
Applications are currently being accepted and processed until the class is full on a rolling admissions basis. Final deadline is August 1.

The Center for Psychoanalytic Studies @ WJC is an exciting new program specifically designed to enable licensed mental health professionals and other qualified individuals to pursue an innovative and rigorous course of study in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a distinguished national and international faculty. The focus will be on interweaving the most current theoretical advances in psychoanalytic thought with best practices in the clinical domain. Two Core Courses — using the latest models of pedagogy — will be featured this academic year. Each Core Course, taught by a core faculty member, will be offered as a month-long online series of four one-hour video recorded lectures with corresponding readings available to students 24/7; in addition, each course will be accompanied by ongoing online “threaded discussions” facilitated by the Instructor and a final one-hour “live” webinar. Interspersed between the Core Courses, will be eight Luminary Lectures – an exciting array of (individual) one-hour video recorded online lectures (with suggested readings) presented by several of our Distinguished Faculty. NPAP North announcement
The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis is a membership organization and training institute. NPAP currently offers a portion of its training in the Albany, Columbia, Berkshire, and Putnam County regions.
NPAP’s psychoanalytic training program is rigorous and comprehensive and provides a plurality of theoretical viewpoints. The curriculum includes a thorough grounding in the psychoanalytic literature including Freud’s drive theory, the British and American object relations schools, self psychology, ego psychology, relational and inter-subjective perspectives and attachment theory. We also offer opportunities to pursue psychoanalytic research.
NPAP is a New York State approved psychoanalytic training institute. Completion of our license-qualifying program will prepare candidates for eligibility to apply for the New York State License in Psychoanalysis. NPAP is also a New York State approved site where LMSWs may accrue the hours needed to qualify for the License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW).
In addition, NPAP offers a certificate program in psychodynamic psychotherapy. The program is designed to meet the needs of licensed professionals interested in deepening their theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in psychodynamic psychotherapy. The program qualifies for CEUs.

Instructor: Lyn Yonack, MA, MSW is a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in private practice in Great Barrington where she works with adults, adolescents, and couples and provides supervision to mental health practitioners and clinical consultation to organizations. She is on the BPI faculty and Affiliate Faculty at the Austen Riggs Center.
This course will look through a psychodynamic lens at the challenges that inevitably arise in work with patients for whom profound psychic pain expresses itself in borderline and narcissistic character organization. Using psychoanalytic literature and clinical material, we will consider theoretical formulations, symptomatic and diagnostic descriptions, implications for the patient’s life and treatment as well as developmental and traumatic anomalies that typically contribute to this cluster of disordered thinking, relationship and behavior. CE/CME Credits: Maximum of 6 units available
Educational Objectives – the participant will be able to:
1. Define the concept and recognize the signs and symptoms of severe character pathology within a psychodynamic context.
2. Identify early developmental and traumatic anomalies that put a person at risk for borderline or narcissistic character organization.
3. Evaluate the clinical challenges presented by patients with severe character pathology and develop strategies for containing and working with those challenges in a dynamically-oriented psychotherapy.

A course on psychoanalytic psychotherapy

We are currently accepting applications for an exciting program being offered again in 2015-2016: The Postgraduate Fellowship Program-West (PGFP-West) sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP). This theoretical and clinical seminar will explore multiple psychoanalytic paradigms – from Freud to the twenty-first century. Using a contemporary, comparative approach, the course is comprised of four units: Freud and Classical Theory, Object Relations, Self Psychology, and Relational Theory. This program is designed for mental health providers and scholars interested in deepening their understanding of psychoanalytic psychology. It aims to enrich participants’ understanding of human nature and to promote a more vital and effective clinical practice. Each seminar meeting will include both didactic and clinical components, with lecture, group discussion, and presentation of clinical material. The number of participants in the program will be limited in order to enhance seminar participation. The seminars will meet at Amherst College on Tuesday evenings from November 2015 through May 2016.

How do we, as adults, hold in mind the images we have of our mothers: real, desired, and imagined? In her award-winning graphic memoir, Are You My Mother, Alison Bechdel interweaves her psychoanalysis, her interest in the work of the British analyst, D.W. Winnicott, and her past and present relationship with her mother to create a comic drama. Using Bechdel’s work as an illustrative focus, this panel will discuss psychoanalytic and psychodynamic perspectives on the search for the maternal in treatment and in everyday life. Panelists will use Bechdel’s work to show how the maternal transference can surface and be used in therapy, to suggest how Winnicott’s work can be integrated in dyadic parent-child therapy, and to explore how individuals develop representations of their mothers, fathers, and mothers in relationship to fathers.
As case material will be presented, this panel is intended for clinicians only. Familiarity with Bechdel’s book is not necessary.

An evening of discussion with an expert in the field of anxiety and depression. Dr. Marie Rudden will present on an innovative treatment approach to panic disorder in her talk —”Listening for the Danger: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of Panic Disorder and Panic States.”
Marie Rudden, M.D., is a training and supervising analyst at Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute, as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Weill Cornell School of Medicine. She was part of a group that researched and developed this treatment, and has received multiple awards for her research in this area.
This event is presented in the spirit of promoting a vigorous intellectual community of mental health professionals in the Valley, as well as providing greater connection to the evolving world of ideas in psychotherapy. There will be ample time for attendees to participate in the discussion during the Q and A, and an informal reception with refreshments will follow.

Readings will be selected from the growing body of publications on the subject. The three principal models of Psychoanalytic Field Theory, one from the work of Baranger & Baranger, another from the work of Ferro & Civitarese, and the Field Theory that emerges from the Relational, Intersubjective and Interpersonal schools, will all be discussed and compared.
